Fed: Dwyer to put his vision for health reform
The man behind a major health summit in Canberra will today put his case to improveAustralia's health care system through better co-operation between the states and commonwealth.
JOHN DWYER, the head of medicine at Sydney's Prince of Wales Hospital, has put togetherthe three-day National Health Care Summit, which closes today.
Professor DWYER will outline his vision for a National Health Reform Council, a collaborationbetween state and federal bureaucracies, to examine ways of improving the ailing healthsystem.
Health Minister KAY PATTERSON has refused to attend the summit, saying it is too politicised.
The states and commonwealth are still at loggerheads over the five-year funding agreementsfor public hospitals which expire at the end of the month.
Senator PATTERSON has also poured cold water on a proposal to ease the backlog in emergencydepartments by allowing GPs to set up on site to treat non-critical patients.
New South Wales Premier BOB CARR believes the proposal would save taxpayers $1.5 billionover five years.
