Leaping congressional districts in a single bound

Many in New Jersey's Democratic Party establishment consider Carl J. Mayer - a wealthy attorney and congressional hopeful - to be somewhat of a gadfly. But because of his deep pockets and maverick mindset, he is becoming someone the party cannot afford to ignore.

Mayer already lost this year's Democratic congressional nomination to challenge freshman GOP Cong. Michael Pappas in northwest New Jersey's 12th District. But he is not willing to count himself out of the 1998 elections, and has now filed to run as a third-party candidate - this time against a Democratic incumbent, five-term Rep. Frank Pallone, in central New Jersey's 6th District.

Mayer's move was quickly challenged in court because of his earlier failed bid in the 12th.
